Flooding in PA

D-L SURVIVES SIGNIFICENT FLOOD DAMAGE

The DL was very fortunate in the late June 27th-30th flooding. On the Carbondale Line we experienced a couple of blown out culverts, high water around the old Marvin Colliery, and some wash overs, nothing too serious. That line was back in full service by mid day July 3rd.

On the Pocono Line there was a wash over at Brownsville Road MP89.5 and a small wash out at MP 89. The entire Pocono Main was opened by the end of the week July 8th, with a monstrous 76 car train waiting at the NS interchange. The Delaware Water Gap, although covered with a lot of water from the Delaware River & Broadhead Creek, endured very well thanks to the rip-rap work the Lackawanna Railroad put down in 1955 following Hurricane Diane, paid for with their Nickel Plate stock, and the rip-rap work we did following Hurricane Ivan in 2004. The river and railroad part ways just southeast of the Point of Gap as the DL rises and the river drops away.
